I love this song.
I've been a college student for almost three years now, and I think I am just now starting to understand what that means… and how to appreciate it. I really fell off the horse a few times during my first two years trying to emotionally and academically adjust to this place. There are a lot of things about Hopkins, Baltimore, and school in general that that I wish I understood earlier:
1. Appreciate your surroundings. Hopkins is a beautiful campus.
2. The forest behind Olin hall has shiny moon rocks
3. The Levering study room and Gilman are good places to study
4. Good things including academic and life advice really do not come naturally at Hopkins. You have to seek them. No one else is looking out for you. It's assumed that you have to be a go-getter.
5. Go on campus at night. There are a lot of cool secert places.
6. Jog around Roland Park and to Hampden.
7. Peabody, The Walters Museum and the Evergreen House.
8. Places to eat and play: Fells Point, Harbor East, the Charles Theater, the Recher Theater.
9. Not everyone is raised to respect others. You will encounter sad, mean, bigoted or generally rude people. Never lower your standards of respect, civility, and good manners, even if no one else understands. Don't let lame people crush your spirit.
10. People can be really fake, petty, demanding, and competitive. These are not your real friends. Peer pressure and gossip are stupid.
11. High school is over. Life never goes on hold. College is a time to grow up. Embrace the responsibility -- sooner is better than later.
12. Being self-motivated and responsible is really hard, but it has to be done. Take care of yourself. Set hard deadlines for yourself. Every moment counts.
13. There are a lot of resources at Hopkins… go find them.
14. Never forget where you came from.
15. Money makes the world go round.
16. Seriously, stop procrastinating.
